Liesbeth Heikens

How much can I express, with how little?

In a nutshell, that's what I look for in my work.

I like to dwell in the transitions between colors.

My subjects come from everyday life, and I try to turn the ordinary into something surprising.

In search of tension between business and silence, I begin a painting by putting much on the canvas, then slowly reducing it down to the essence I wish to convey. It turns out that this process is not reversible.

If I had to compare my paintings with a different form of expression, I think of a poem. A poem touches me with words, a deeper layer of being. I try that with my paintings, with varying success.

I'm happy when I'm surprised by the outcome of a painting, when simplicity, silence and humor alternate.

Biography

I studied Art and Textiles in Delft, followed by a secondary/tertiary teaching degree in Drawing. I then was lucky enough to spend 2 years painting and studying Monumental Art at the prestigious Royal Academy in Amsterdam.

I briefly taught art in high school before moving to San Francisco, CA, where I ended up staying for 23 years. There, I worked eight years as a textile designer, collaborating with weavers in Europe and Asia. But painting remained an important means of expression, and I continued with commissions and exhibitions.

My painting style changed over the years, from exuberant-expressive to a quieter and more subdued style, but with a recognizable composition and strong colors.
